On November 4, Limmud FSU West Coast hosted Ruta Vanagaite, a non-Jewish writer born in Lithuania, as she presented her book, Mūsiškiai (Our People; Journey with an Enemy), co-authored with Efraim Zuroff. The book focuses on complicity of Lithuanians in Holocaust crimes and the efforts of Lithuanian governments to hide the role played by local Nazi collaborators. It has deeply affected public discourse on Holocaust and inspired a search for truth among many young Lithuanians.
Shockingly, all of Ruta’s books were banned in her own country after government and publisher decided that it was too damaging to the “national narrative”. The event was co-sponsored by Covenant Foundation and held at the Contra Costa Jewish day school and was open to school families and wider community. Participants received a private tour of the school and parents were invited to attend other CCJDS events.
